Gameel Al-Batouti, a pilot for EgyptAir and former officer for the Egyptian Air Force, was at the controls of EgyptAir Flight 990 on 31 October 1999 when it tragically crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. All 217 individuals on board lost their lives in the crash. According to the US National Transportation Safety Board, it was determined that Al-Batouti intentionally caused the crash by making unauthorized flight control inputs while he was alone in the cockpit. The exact reasons for his actions remain a mystery.
