Leymah Gbowee

Leymah Gbowee is a well-known Liberian peace activist who gained recognition for her leadership in the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace movement. This movement was instrumental in bringing an end to the Second Liberian Civil War in 2003. Working closely with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Gbowee contributed to a period of peace which ultimately facilitated a successful election in 2005. In recognition of their nonviolent advocacy for women’s safety and rights in peace-building initiatives, Gbowee, Sirleaf, and Tawakkul Karman were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011.
