Pope Sergius I served as the bishop of Rome from 687 until his passing and is recognized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. He was elected during a period of rival claims to the papacy and encountered challenges from the Quinisext Council, which he opposed. Despite Emperor Justinian II’s efforts to have him arrested, Sergius was shielded by the Roman people and the Italian militia, preventing his transfer to Constantinople. Throughout his papacy, Sergius steadfastly refused to accept the canons of the Quinisext Council.
