John Harvard, an English dissenting minister, immigrated to New England in 1637 and was a graduate of Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge. He made a substantial bequest to the recently established Massachusetts Bay Colony college, which was eventually renamed Harvard College in recognition of his contribution. Harvard University regards him as one of its esteemed founders, and his legacy is commemorated on campus with a statue.
