Gottfried Semper, a German architect and art critic, is renowned for designing the Semper Opera House in Dresden. He was involved in the May Uprising in Dresden, which led to his exile in Zürich and London. Following an amnesty in 1862, Semper returned to Germany. He wrote about the origins of architecture and the polychrome style of ancient Greece. His projects included urban redesigns and creating a baton for Richard Wagner. Wagner utilized Semper’s Munich opera house design for the Bayreuth Festspielhaus without authorization.
