Frances Burney, also known as Fanny Burney and Madame d’Arblay, was an English satirical novelist, diarist, and playwright. She served as the “Keeper of the Robes” to Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz from 1786 to 1790 and married General Alexandre d’Arblay in 1793. Burney wrote four novels during her career, with “Evelina” (1778) being the most successful. Her stage plays were mostly unperformed in her lifetime. Additionally, she authored a memoir of her father and various letters and journals, which were published posthumously starting in 1889.
