James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, was an English nobleman and military officer known for his service in multiple wars, including the Second Anglo-Dutch War, the Third Anglo-Dutch War, and the Franco-Dutch War. He led English troops and the Anglo-Dutch brigade in various conflicts. Monmouth famously spearheaded the unsuccessful Monmouth Rebellion in 1685 in an effort to overthrow his uncle, King James II and VII. Despite claiming the throne based on his Protestant beliefs and royal lineage, he was captured, tried for treason, and ultimately beheaded.
