Jean served as the Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 1964 until his abdication in 2000. He received his education in Luxembourg and England before studying at Université Laval in Quebec City. During World War II, he joined the British army’s Irish Guards and played a role in the liberation of Luxembourg. He also held the position of Colonel of the Regiment of the Irish Guards from 1984 to 2000. Jean married Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium in 1953 and had five children.
