Jarno Saarinen, a Finnish professional motorcycle racer, competed in the FIM Grand Prix motorcycle racing world championships from 1968 to 1973. He initially rode as a Yamaha privateer before gaining full factory support in 1972 and 1973. Widely recognized as one of the most talented road racers of his era, Saarinen’s promising career was tragically cut short when he lost his life during the 1973 Nations Grand Prix in Italy. His untimely passing led to increased calls for safety improvements in motorcycle racing. Saarinen is the sole Finn to have clinched a solo motorcycle road racing world championship and was posthumously honored with induction into the F.I.M. MotoGP Hall of Fame in 2009.
