Wallis Simpson, an American socialite, married former King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom, causing a constitutional crisis that led to his abdication. Known as the Duchess of Windsor, she was denied the title of “Royal Highness.” Both Wallis and Edward were suspected of being Nazi sympathizers, having visited Germany and met Adolf Hitler in 1937. Edward later served as governor of the Bahamas during World War II. After Edward’s death, Wallis lived in seclusion, remaining a controversial figure in British history.
