Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima is a renowned Brazilian retired long-distance runner known for his impressive achievements in marathon running. He won the Tokyo International Marathon in 1996 and the Hamburg Marathon in 2004. Lima also secured victories at the South American Cross Country Championships in 1995 and the marathon at the Pan American Games in 1999 and 2003. His sportsmanship was widely acknowledged when he was attacked during the 2004 Summer Olympics marathon, eventually winning the bronze medal and being awarded the Pierre de Coubertin Medal. Lima also had the honor of lighting the Olympic cauldron at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
