Gayle S. Rubin is an American cultural anthropologist, theorist, and activist known for her pioneering work in feminist theory and queer studies. Her influential essays include “The Traffic in Women” (1975), challenging Marxist ideas on gender oppression, and “Thinking Sex” (1984), a foundational text in gay and lesbian studies and queer theory. She has written extensively on topics such as sexuality politics, gender oppression, sadomasochism, pornography, and urban sexual subcultures. Rubin is an associate professor of Anthropology and Women’s Studies at the University of Michigan.
