Charles de Gaulle was a French military officer and statesman. He led the Free French Forces during World War II against Nazi Germany and chaired the Provisional Government of the French Republic from 1944 to 1946, restoring democracy in France. In 1958, he became Prime Minister during the Algerian War, rewriting the Constitution of France and establishing the Fifth Republic. Elected President the same year, he implemented policies to enhance French independence, such as withdrawing from NATO’s integrated military command and creating an independent nuclear strike force.
