John N. Mitchell served as the 67th Attorney General of the United States under President Richard Nixon. Before his appointment, he was a municipal bond lawyer and had close ties to Nixon. Mitchell also chaired Nixon’s presidential campaigns in 1968 and 1972. He was known for his tough “law-and-order” approach but became entangled in the Watergate scandal, leading to legal issues. Mitchell was tried, found guilty, and served 19 months in prison for his involvement in the scandal.
