David Hackett Souter is an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1990 to 2009. Beginning his career in public service in New Hampshire, he held various legal positions. Initially perceived as a conservative justice, Souter later moved towards the ideological center and ultimately sided with the Court’s liberal wing. He retired in 2009 during President Obama’s term and has since presided over cases at the circuit court level.
