Henry Edward Roberts, an American engineer, entrepreneur, and medical doctor, is widely recognized as “the father of the personal computer.” He established Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS) in 1970 and initially focused on selling electronics kits. In 1974, Roberts achieved commercial success with the launch of the Altair 8800 personal computer. The creation of Altair BASIC by Bill Gates and Paul Allen at MITS marked a significant milestone for Microsoft as it was their first product. Roberts went on to sell MITS in 1977 and later retired to Georgia, where he pursued farming, studied medicine, and worked as a small-town doctor in Cochran.
