William Murdoch, a Scottish chemist, inventor, and mechanical engineer, is renowned for his contributions to the development of the oscillating cylinder steam engine and gas lighting technology in the early 1790s. He also played a key role in advancing steam engine innovations such as the sun and planet gear and D slide valve. Additionally, Murdoch invented the steam gun, pneumatic tube message system, and built a prototype steam locomotive in 1784. Despite his noteworthy achievements, Murdoch’s inventor legacy was somewhat overshadowed by his peers at Boulton & Watt.
