Joe Henry Engle was a skilled American pilot, aeronautical engineer, and NASA astronaut. He commanded two Space Shuttle missions, such as STS-2 in 1981, and took part in the Shuttle program’s Approach and Landing Tests. Engle was one of the exceptional pilots who piloted the North American X-15, conducting three flights above 50 miles and obtaining astronaut wings. He was chosen for NASA’s 5th Astronaut Group, where he contributed to the Apollo program and was a backup Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 14.
