Whittaker Chambers was an American writer and intelligence agent known for his complex professional background. He was previously associated with the Communist Party and worked as a Soviet spy before defecting. Chambers played a significant role in the famous Hiss case, providing testimony. He later worked at Time magazine and then became a senior editor at National Review. In his 1952 memoir Witness, Chambers recounted his experiences. He was honored posthumously with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Ronald Reagan in 1984.
