Margarita Bertheau Odio was a prominent Costa Rican painter and cultural promoter known for her diverse artistic styles, including landscapes, portraits, watercolor figures, and geometric, surrealistic, and abstract works. Regarded as the first female watercolor artist in her country, she was a contemporary of influential Costa Rican artists like Dinora Bolandi, Lola Fernandez, and Sonia Romero. Bertheau collaborated with Francisco Amighetti on the mural “Agriculture,” which depicted a mix of pastoral scenes and violence. She played a key role in teaching fine art at the University of Costa Rica and fostering the second generation of women artists in Costa Rica.
