Carl Ronald Boenish, an American freefall cinematographer, is renowned as the pioneer of modern BASE jumping. He gained recognition for capturing the initial jumps from El Capitan in 1978 using ram-air parachutes. Boenish repeated these jumps to advance and popularize BASE jumping as a leisure pursuit. His cinematography work includes the film “The Gypsy Moths” and a National Geographic Explorer segment featuring jumps from El Capitan. To enhance safety in the sport, he established BASE Magazine. Boenish’s life and tragic demise are depicted in the documentary “Sunshine Superman.”
