She was the first female law clerk of the Nevada Supreme Court, the first female deputy public defender in Santa Clara County, and the first woman to serve in the California State Cabinet. Bird made history as the 25th Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, becoming the first female Chief Justice in the state’s history. However, she also holds the unique distinction of being the only Chief Justice in California to lose a retention election.
